India is one of the world’s most exciting wildlife destinations, with landscapes as varied as its culture. From the sal forests of Central India to the grasslands of the Himalayan foothills and the lush Western Ghats of the south, each region offers a unique safari experience.
You might follow tiger tracks through Bandhavgarh, watch wild elephants in Periyar, or listen for bird calls on the shores of Jim Corbett’s lakes. The diversity of species is extraordinary – tigers, leopards, sloth bears, one-horned rhinos, elephants, and over 1,300 species of birds.
A safari tour in India is also about the atmosphere beyond the wildlife: staying in charming jungle lodges, forest bungalows and luxury tented camps, travelling by jeep, boat, or on foot, and soaking up the slower rhythm of nature. With expert guides to share their knowledge, every journey into the wild feels like a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

“A great experience in lots of ways. The trip itself was expertly curated... all arrangements worked perfectly. The team continued to be proactive and helpful throughout.
We stayed at Kaav (superb) and saw a tiger up close. India is always great but having everything taken care of and working so well makes it even better.”

“With an amazing itinerary, the film's communication with clients has been first class. Meeting their needs, and responding quickly to any queries or problems has been excellent.
Having travelled the world for the last 25 years, our India tour has been one of the best ever. The organisation here in the UK, the backup in India, and the quality both of hotels and lodges, has been of the highest order. During our tour we experienced many tiger viewings.”
David and Maureen, Scotland
“As a wildlife photographer, the stunning scenery of South India has always appealed to me. I chose Authentic India Tours as I could create my own itinerary to fit in with a very short timescale. The safaris were amazing, and it was amazing to see elephants at Periyar, along with a variety of amazing creatures!
I stayed in some incredible hotels, met amazing people and had a wonderful time. Thank you!”
In parks such as Periyar in Kerala or along the Chambal River near Agra or Kabinir River in Nagarhole, safaris take to the water. Drifting silently across the surface, you may spot elephants cooling themselves on the banks, otters playing in the shallows, or gharials basking in the sun. The gentle pace of a boat safari reveals a completely different side of the wilderness, often with breathtaking birdlife overhead.
Walking Safaris
Few experiences are as thrilling as exploring the jungle on foot. In Satpura and select reserves, trained guides lead you along forest trails, teaching you to read animal tracks, recognise alarm calls, and notice the smaller wonders of the wild, from orchids to butterflies. The slower pace heightens your senses and gives a raw, intimate connection with the natural world.
Morning and Afternoon Game Drives
Safaris in India are timed to coincide with the hours when wildlife is most active. Set out in open 4x4 jeeps as the sun rises or just before dusk, guided by expert naturalists who know the forest intimately. The air is filled with birdsong, deer move quietly through the trees, and with luck, a tiger or leopard might emerge from the shadows, moments that create thrilling excitement.
Stay in Characterful Jungle Lodges
Your safari adventure is enhanced by the places you stay. Many lodges and camps are set right on the edge of the parks, blending rustic charm with modern comfort. Evenings often end around a fire under star-filled skies, with the distant calls of jackals or owls as your soundtrack. Staying in these retreats adds atmosphere and a sense of belonging to the forest itself.
Birdwatching Expeditions
India is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to more than 1,300 species. Specialist excursions take you into wetlands, forests and grasslands where you can spot everything from hornbills and kingfishers to migratory flocks arriving from Siberia. Even travellers who don’t consider themselves bird enthusiasts often find themselves captivated by the sheer variety and colour on display.
Combine Wildlife with Culture
One of India’s strengths is how easily safari adventures combine with cultural treasures. In Ranthambore, explore the centuries-old hilltop fort before heading out on an afternoon drive. In Periyar, pair elephant and bird sightings with a visit to a spice plantation. And in Madhya Pradesh, follow your time in the jungle with temple visits or village markets. This fusion of wild nature and human heritage makes every safari tour richer and more rewarding.
Photography Opportunities
For photographers, India’s parks are a dream. The golden light filtering through sal forests, the play of shadow on a tiger’s coat, or the drama of a herd of elephants crossing a river — these are scenes that inspire amateurs and professionals alike. Whether you’re capturing landscapes, close-up portraits of wildlife, or the life of a remote village, every moment on safari has the potential to become an extraordinary image.
Experiences on an India Safari Tour
An Indian safari is about much more than spotting wildlife; it is both a journey into the wild and a deep cultural exploration, offering encounters that are thrilling, educational, and profoundly memorable. It’s the thrill of early-morning drives through misty forests, the quiet anticipation of waiting at a watering hole, and the sense of discovery that comes with each encounter. Midday excursions to nearby villages, tribal settlements, and local markets offer insight into rural life, crafts, and traditions, while each journey combines adventure with comfort, as you explore by jeep, boat or on foot, stay in characterful lodges, and immerse yourself in the sounds and stories of the jungle.

Places to go on Safari
Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan
Ranthambore is one of the best-known safari destinations in India, where tigers can often be seen wandering past ancient temples and lakes. The 10th-century Ranthambore Fort rises above the forest, adding a sense of history to every jeep ride. Its mix of open grassland, rocky ridges and serene waterholes makes the park especially scenic, and sightings of leopards, sloth bears and marsh crocodiles are also possible.
Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh
Bandhavgarh is famed for having one of the highest densities of tigers in the world, giving visitors an excellent chance of spotting India’s most iconic predator. The park is also rich in history, with old temples, caves and the dramatic Bandhavgarh Fort scattered among the forested hills. Beyond tigers, Bandhavgarh is alive with sambar and chital deer, wild boar and a dazzling variety of birdlife.
Nagarhole National Park, Karnataka
Part of the vast Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Nagarhole combines dense forest with river valleys and grassy swathes, making it one of South India’s richest wildlife areas. Tigers and leopards roam here, alongside packs of wild dogs, while the Kabini River draws huge herds of elephants. The park is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with species ranging from crested serpent eagles to the vivid Malabar trogon.
Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh
Straddling two states, Pench is another landscape celebrated by Kipling. Its teak forests and wide rivers are perfect for tracking tiger and leopard, while jackals, langurs and herds of deer add to the atmosphere. The park’s tranquil setting and high biodiversity make it a popular choice for those who want a classic Indian safari experience with fewer crowds.
Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand
India’s very first national park, established in 1936, Jim Corbett remains one of its most beautiful. Spread across the Himalayan foothills, the park is a mosaic of rivers, dense forest and open grasslands. Safaris here might bring encounters with elephants, gharials basking on riverbanks, and a wealth of birdlife — over 600 species have been recorded. Tigers live in good numbers too, though spotting them requires patience.
Kaziranga National Park, Assam
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kaziranga is home to the world’s largest population of the great one-horned rhinoceros. Its floodplains and tall elephant grass provide dramatic scenery for jeep and elephant-back safaris. Alongside rhinos, you might see wild water buffalo, swamp deer and an astonishing range of birdlife. With its misty mornings and views of the Brahmaputra River, Kaziranga feels very different to India’s central and southern parks.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala
Set in the lush Western Ghats, Periyar is a more tranquil safari destination where nature can be enjoyed at a gentler pace. Boat rides on the vast Periyar Lake reveal herds of elephants drinking at the water’s edge, while the surrounding forests are alive with lion-tailed macaques, Malabar giant squirrels and colourful bird species. The spice plantations and tea estates nearby add another layer of interest to a visit here.
Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh
The inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book, Kanha is a vast wilderness of lush sal forest, meadows and rivers. It is the only place where you can see the rare hard-ground barasingha deer, brought back from the brink of extinction here. Jeep safaris may also reveal tigers, leopards, sloth bears and wild dogs, while the open grasslands are superb for birdwatching. Kanha’s size and beauty make it one of India’s most rewarding parks for extended stays.
Gir National Park, Gujarat
The last refuge of the Asiatic lion, Gir offers a safari experience unlike anywhere else in India. Here, you can track these magnificent big cats through dry deciduous forest and scrubland, often seeing them at close range. The park also supports leopards, striped hyenas and over 300 bird species. Gir’s success in conserving the Asiatic lion is one of India’s greatest wildlife stories.
Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh
Less visited than the big-name reserves, Satpura offers a more intimate, off-the-beaten-track safari. Its rugged hills, sandstone cliffs and quiet forests can be explored not just by jeep, but also on foot, by canoe and even by elephant. Tigers are elusive here, but the park excels for leopard, sloth bear, wild dog and bird sightings. For travellers seeking something quieter and more adventurous, Satpura is a hidden gem.
Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharastha
Nestled in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district, this pristine sanctuary is home to one of the country’s most thriving tiger populations, along with leopards, dholes, sloth bears, and an extraordinary variety of birds. Traverse whispering teak and bamboo forests, expansive grasslands, and shimmering lakes on private safaris, where every rustle, every pugmark, and every fleeting glance of a wild creature offers a moment of awe and unforgettable connection with nature.
Dhudwa National Park, Uttar Pradesh
Dudhwa National Park: a hidden jewel of India’s Terai. Nestled along the Indo-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh, Dudhwa is a sanctuary of tall sal forests, winding grasslands, and serene wetlands, where nature thrives in its purest form. Home to elusive tigers, leopards, swamp deer, elephants, and a dazzling array of birdlife, every safari here is a journey into an untouched wilderness.
Bandipur National Park, Karnataka
Nestled at the edge of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Bandipur is a sanctuary of rolling hills, dense forests, and winding streams, where tigers, leopards, elephants, and a rich variety of birds roam freely.

The One-Horned Rhinoceros
